Seasonal Skincare Tips

Read more about how you can adjust your routine to optimize skin health:

Transitioning your skin care from summer to winter is important as weather changes, increasing hydration and protecting your skin's barrier from drying effects of cold air. Your skin barrier is your lipid barrier, the uttermost layer of your skin. It protects against environmental factors, germs, chemicals, allergens and UV radiation. It retains your moisture in your skin and keeps your skin hydrated. During the winter months, your skin faces different challenges compared to the warmer seasons, mainly due to the drop in humidity, colder temperatures, and indoor heating.

When temperatures drop, the air tends to become much drier, and your skin loses moisture more quickly. In the summer there is more humidity in the air, causing your skin to need less moisture. Heat and humidity can cause your skin to produce more oil. This natural increase in sebum can mix with heavier moisturizers, leading to clogged pores, breakouts, or that unwanted oily shine on your face.

Cleanser

For summer, choose a cleanser that contains salicylic acid. This BHA is a gentle exfoliant that’s beneficial for oily skin.

For winter choose a cream or oil-based cleanser that will increase moisture. Consider skipping your morning cleanse and just tone to preserve your natural oils on your skin.

Moisturizers

In the summer, choosing a lightweight moisturizer is a better option, as skin tends to be oilier in the summer. As there is more humidity in the air your skin will need less hydration. The best ingredients for summer moisturizers are: Hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide, Aloe vera, Glycerin and Antioxidants.

Winter you can opt for a thicker cream-based moisturizer. Great ingredients for a thicker moisturizer include shea butter, ceramides, and hydronic acid. All these ingredients will help to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier.

Exfoliants

In the summer, you may slightly increase frequency (2–3x/week) if your skin tolerates. Use products with BHAs (salicylic acid) to decongest pores. Antioxidants are also very beneficial, as they help to fight off sun exposure.

In the winter, exfoliate less (1x/week or less). Choose creamy, hydrating products with lactic acid. Lactic acid is important to lock in moisture and stimulate collagen production.

Serums

In the summer, use lightweight, fast-absorbing serums with antioxidants that offer hydration without heaviness or clogging pores. The best ingredients are vitamin C (protection against sun damage, brightening and ant-aging), niacinamide (controls oil, soothes redness), lightweight hyaluronic acid (non-greasy hydration) and antioxidants.

In the winter, use rich, hydrating serums that boost moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. Layer under a heavier moisturizer for extra protection. Great ingredients to consider include hyaluronic acid (deep hydration), glycerin (moisture retention), squalene (nourishing oil-like feel), niacinamide (skin barrier support), and vitamin C (brightening, anti-aging)

Sunscreen

Don't skip sunscreen just because it's winter. UV rays are present all year round. A broad spectrum of at least 30 SPF is necessary all year round.
