Hormones & Womanhood
Hormones! We always hear about them, but how much do we actually know? And how often do we bypass over the effect they have on us? As women, we are constantly dealing with a nautral hormone flucuation, but what does that really mean?
Let’s start by looking at what hormones are - “Hormones are chemical messengers that coordinate different functions in your body. Several glands, organs and tissues make and release hormones, many of which make up your endocrine system” (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Hormones that commonly affect women include:
Estrogen
Progesterone
Testosterone
Cortisol
Insulin
Thyroid hormones
Hormones can affect our body greatly, including our:
Mood
Metabolism
Hair
Skin
Sleep
Development
During different stages of our life or menstrual cycle, these hormones will flucuate! This includes our menstrual phases (follicular, ovulation, luteal and menstruation), puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Conditions that are affected by hormones include diabetes, hyper/hypothyroid, PCOS, Cushing’s disease, and edometriosis. These conditions can cause a slew of symptoms. For example:
Hair loss or excess hair growth
Hormonal acne
Anxiety/depression
Cramping and discomfort
Fertility complications
Weight flucuation
Here at Bauman Laser and Electrolysis, we see a lot of skin and hair conditions affected by hormones. Though these conditions are not uncommon, everybody is different. If you are experiencing these symptoms or unsure of your hormones, we encourage you to see a health professional.
