When to start skincare, and why it matters!

Skincare isn’t just about products, it is about preventing, protecting, and supporting your skin as it changes through each decade.

While routines should evolve with age, it’s never too early (or too late) to start caring for your skin!

Often we recommend starting as early as age 10-12 for your basic skincare needs. This is the age where we are going to start developing habits and routines (both good and bad!)

Beginning with the bare basics of cleansing the skin, moisturizing and protecting your skin with a daily SPF is a great starting point to get the ball rolling on your skincare journey.

As we continue to move into puberty our skin continues to change from ages 13-18. You'll notice changes with hormones, acne and oil balance on the skin. This is often where you'll change your routine slightly- still wanting to clean and protect it- but you may need to introduce target products with ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or niacinamides to help remove excess oils and calm upset and inflamed acne.

Moving into our 20s prevention becomes everything!

Did you know that we lose 1% of our collagen each year after the age of 20?!

At this age, prevention is always easier and more effective then correction later on.

This is the time we will want to add in antioxidants like Vitamin C and weekly gentle exfoliating whether that be a mechanical exfoliation like our Vivier Vitamin C Scrub, or a chemical exfoliation similar to our Vivier Illuminating Enzymatic Peel.

Headed into our 30s bring another round of aging. This is most often the time we are going to see past sun damage coming to the surface, fine lines, uneven tone and dullness. Our cell turn over slows making skin texture look rougher and damage becomes more apparent. Declining collagen becomes more noticable and life stresses begin to show on the skin.

While at this age we may have mastered those bare basics, this is the age where professionals will often recommend a retinol to help encourage cell turnover.

40s and up are known as our midlife transition, marked by a mix of career peaks, growing self awareness and health and skin changes. Our skin begins to thin, our natural oils decrease and hydration becomes key! Updating your routine to more moisturize dense and firming products like our Vivier Grenzcine line and Creme 47 or Ultimage are often recommended at this stage.

Some people feel they need more assistance with skin concerns outside of a daily skincare routine. This is where we often will recommend in clinic services such as IPL, Laser Genesis or chemical peels. But for best results within a treatment plan a good and consistent home care routine is always going to be best!

Lifestyle and genetics play a huge part in our skin changes. Alcohol, smoking, diet and environmental factors can accelerate our aging causing us to have a more advanced skincare routine.

To know what's best for you and your skintype come in and see us for a facial where we can assess your skin and get you using the correct products to start your skincare journey- regardless of your age!!

The bottom line; you don't start skincare at a certain age , you adjust as your skin matures. The earlier you start your prevention, the fewer issues you'll have!
